eHarmony was founded in the US in 2000 by Dr Neil Clark Warren, a clinic psychologist who had spent 35 years counseling couples. Dr Warren realised that some of the couples who he was counselling were fundamentally not compatible with each other, and these relationships were tending to end in divorce. However the relationships which lasted were made up of compatible couples.

He decided to look for the traits which define compatibility and lead to a successful relationship. Together with Dr.Galen Buckwalter, a research professor at the University of Southern California in the USA, he started researching thousands of couples to identify the characteristics of a successful relationship.

Before launching in Australia, eHarmony gathered data from Australian couples to make sure its matching algorithm would be equally effective in helping Australian singles find love.
